Last time I checked, God still owns everything, including all geometric patterns that exist in the known universe.
Shapes and objects in the material world belong to God. They only come to signify certain meanings because of various forms of human interpretation that attach meaning to them. For example, masama ba ang ginto? How outrageous.
What angered God was the meaning they attached to the image, not the image itself. That’s also the spirit of Exodus 20:4. God is not against the fine art of sculpture. He is against attaching idolatrous meaning to sculpted images of His creation.
A triangle is just a triangle. It’s a polygon. It has three corners. Some triangles are obtuse, others are scalene, others are equilateral, and then there’s isosceles and the right one. When it comes to my share of the pizza, obtuse is my personal favorite hohoho.
For a certain group of human interpreters, a triangle could be an Illuminati sign when they use it for their rituals or when they combine it with other signifiers that serve to reinforce the Illuminati symbolism. This is no doubt ungodly.
But in the case of Hillsong, they had explained that the triangle was supposed to be a representation of Mt. Zion. The meaning they attached to the triangle was Mt. Zion, not the pyramids of Giza. And certainly not Baphomet or the grand architect or the all-seeing eye. Need they say more?
But they used Rihanna’s “Diamonds” in the production number! Well, I’m also not the type who prefers the use of secular songs in church services and events. But maybe they had a creative purpose for using the music. Maybe there was a story they were trying to tell and the song was useful toward that end. Maybe they were finding a way to spark engagement with their non-Christian audience. We need to see the bigger picture. Personally, though, I would think twice or thrice before using “Diamonds” because people might view it as an endorsement of Rhianna’s sex kitten image and her music. I just hope that the overall messaging of the production number, which put the song in a grander context of Biblical truth, would trump the danger of Hillsong being wrongly viewed as endorsing Rhianna. Secular music in itself is not bad but we should be careful how various lyrical contents influence our lives. Kahit kapag kausap ko lang ang kahit sinong tao, I should be careful how his/her words influence me.
Pero sana naman, when a church is under fire, let’s give it the benefit of the doubt. Pakinggan natin explanation nila. Mt. Zion ba ‘yung triangle? Eh ‘di sige Mt. Zion. Let’s pray for Hillsong and hope that God would continue to use them to produce music that honor Jesus and uplift the human soul.
